Lexmark toner and laser cartridge printing options
In the past couple of years, one of the biggest stories involving Lexmark and the laser refurbishing community, has been the printing company's attempts to lock remanufacturers and laser print cartridge refillers out of the market for printing options for Lexmark monochrome and color laser printing systems. Lexmark was one of the first laser printing system manufacturers to start putting "lock-out" chips on their Lexmark laser print cartridges. These chips in effect shut down the Lexmark laser print cartridge once they reached empty, however, brand new compatible replacement cartridge chips are now easily obtained for most monochrome models. Conversely, Lexmark has not been installing any chips yet on their color laser print cartridges, though the color OPC cartridges incorporate either a fuse or a chip. Their color laser printing systems, such as the Lexmark C510 and Lexmark C510n, use a system of five separate laser cartridges: one laser print cartridge for each color (cyan, magenta, yellow and black toner) and one OPC cartridge (aka photoconductor unit).
